DC Live! Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, Part 2 Livestream

Finalfantasyivtay 02182024

Three hours into Final Fantasy IV: The After Years and I can’t say I’m having a great time. The story starts off interesting, then the little bit of plot I got into just unraveled. I nearly lost my mind at King Cecil being confused as to how monsters were getting past the castle gate. He conveniently misses the fact that almost all the invading monsters have wings until Cid points this out. Cecil’s habit of sending away his wife, who’s the best healer in the game is still an issue.

Seeing Ceodore’s plot didn’t help much with the dumber elements either. His commanding officer was badly injured during a monster attack. Instead of healing Biggs with Cura, the teenager just complained about not being able to find help. If this is the quality of writing in three hours into this game, it’s going to be a painfully long journey.

On the gameplay side, it feels like The After Years was inspired by elements of Shin Megami Tensei with its moon phases cycle, and borrowed them for this sequel. Except, those elements only serve to be annoying. It feels like a layer of artificial difficulty was added just because. Additionally, the random encounter rate has been cranked up to insanely high levels, and no one consistently stays in your party. It was an issue in the original Final Fantasy IV and is so much worse in The After Years.

I can only hope some element of the story picks up soon.

Join me at 8PM Eastern, 7PM Central on our Twitch Channel as I surrender my sanity to Final Fantasy IV: The After Years.

As always, a recording of the stream will be archived on our YouTube channel and embedded below.
