DC Live! SMT Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army Livestream, Part 1

SMTDevilSummoner3-07112021

Tonight we’re back to our regular schedule and I’m ready to start Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army. For all of our talk about Megaten games, we’ve played surprisingly few of them on our Twitch channel. And no, my livestreams of the Persona dancing games do not count. Heck, we’ve actually talked very little about the Devil Summoner games featuring Raidou Kuzunoha.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army is actually the third game in the Devil Summoner series. Like the Persona games, Devil Summoner is a spin-off from mainline Shin Megami Tensei. It doesn’t take place after an apocalypse nor is there a fight to shape what humanity will ultimately become. The first two Devil Summoner games were released in the mid-90s for the Sega Saturn and never left Japan. America’s first introduction to the Devil Summoner series came in 2006 with the PS2 release of Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army. (To be fair, the first Devil Summoner never left Japan, but the second game in the series, Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers did receive a 3DS remake and was released in North America in 2013.)

Unlike the previous games in the series, Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army takes place in 1931, during a highly fictionalized version of the Taishō period. (In reality this period in Japan lasted from 1912 to 1926, but in this game it is extended to the 1930s.) The fun kicks off when two members of the Narumi Detective Agency, Shohei Narumi and Raidou Kuzunoha are aiding a client. She asks for the detectives to kill her, but before they can ask why she’s spirited away by strange men in armor. This kicks off a deeper investigation that leads further into the world of the supernatural.

Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army also differs from other Megaten games because it’s an action-based RPG opposed to being strictly turn-based. However, it shares many elements with the series such as demon summoning and demon fusion. This game will be my first foray into an action-based Megaten. I’ll be playing the PS2 Classics version of this game on my PS3. Hopefully, the experience isn’t too buggy.

Join me at 8PM Eastern, 7PM Central on our Twitch Channel as I solve some crimes and summon some demons with Raidou Kuzunoha in a game with one of the longest titles ever.

As always, a recording of the stream will be archived on our YouTube channel and embedded below.
