Geek-Related Predictions for 2023
|Well, it’s a new year. The year 2022 was not a good one by several accounts, and the chance that 2023 will be improved is low in terms of national and worldwide issues. The hope, then, is the this year could be improved on a personal level. That’s what I’m hoping for, and I’m referring to matters beyond these predictions turning out well. Even if I guess many of these accurately as I did in 2022, I’ll be satisfied.
1. Nintendo will reveal their next gaming platform this year, a new-generation leap over the Nintendo Switch. They will confirm its release for early 2024.
2. Speaking of Nintendo: 2023 is the year in which the company will finally reveal Retro Studios’ Metroid Prime 4. But no release date or timeframe will be provided.
3. Konami, which has somewhat returned to video game development, will reveal a brand-new Metal Gear game. But they won’t provide any kind of release timeframe for it.
4. Atlus will finally reveal Persona 6. I will buck the trend from the last two predictions by saying that it will also release this year.
5. Marvel Entertainment will start getting desperate after a series of Marvel movies have done worse than their predecessors, and will officially reveal plans to introduce the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
6. The Super Mario Bros. movie will be the highest-grossing animated film of the year worldwide, and will be among the biggest movies overall.
7. There’s been plenty of skepticism of legality surrounding Microsoft’s impending acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which has led to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) taking the significant step of suing to stop it. But only a small number of large corporate acquisitions have been successfully scuttled. Though one was stopped this year (for now, anyway), the Microsoft and Activision Blizzard one ultimately won’t be.
8. Tekken 8 will launch with the same bad online netplay as previous Bandai Namco fighting games. No rollback netcode here.
9. A new and slimmer PlayStation 5 model will launch later in the year, a system that will further encourage owners to buy games digitally rather than physically.
10. Dragon Ball will still not return as a TV series. Instead, another new movie will be announced.
11. The AI revolution will only get worse. Not only will more entertainment works utilize it as High on Life did in 2022, but companies will start putting out press releases entirely written by AI.
12. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will not release by the year’s end, it will be delayed out of the “winter” release timeframe. It will be announced for a release after this period.
Hopefully everyone has, at least, an improved 2023 compared to 2022. I didn’t make any promises to go easy or hard on myself for the predictions this year; I simply went with the flow. Sometimes, that’s the best idea, and I intend to follow that mantra throughout the year. I’ll assume that self-advice won’t lead me off the cliffside.
Love these predictions Geoff!
1. Nintendo will reveal their next gaming platform this year, a new-generation leap over the Nintendo Switch. They will confirm its release for early 2024.
>> Agree they will announce something, and at the time of announcement Nintendo will also emphasize Nintendo Switch is the 2nd best-selling console of all time, only behind Nintendo DS, as FY 2022 report (coming out in May-June 2023) will emphasize that Nintendo Switch has reached (or will shortly in the summer of 2023) over 119 million units, surpassing the Nintendo Gameboy 118 Units. but the last 1 million will be sold in the first fiscal quarter but Nintendo will still talk about it <> I think this is possible, but vaguely recall reading in the last month that staff (designers) of Persona V said they wanted to reward fans. And I interpreted this as “we will remake Persona I and/or 2 and release for a modern platform”. This is sort of cool, but personally probably will not be interested. I think if they do this then Personal 6 will maybe not get announced <> I think this will indeed happen! However, I think along with your #5 referencing Marvel movies, 2023 will be the year where some historic forecasting about the # of movie tickets and sales will be LOWER than expected. Both Marvel/Disney (and maybe Nintendo depending) will bemoan that in-person theatre performances are still not meeting expectations since COVID. This will be said about the Avatar #2 movie as well. It’s sort of inevitable…. Geoff as you recall going to movies long time ago at the Riverview in Philadelphia it’s now closed! Recently in Philly I wanted to go to a movie and there was 0 options without an hour in the car and/or leaving the state of Pennsylvania. Industry having some crazy headwinds. Due to Mario brothers animated series being on Paramount Plus I wonder if there is a chance Paramount will try to license Mario Movie Streaming Rights? <> Agree, if there is a way to create more garbage and fill the internet with the garbage to sell Ads, it will keep happening as it has been for the last 20 years <> Nintendo / Niantic will announce Pikmin bloom closing
Rich add on #2 >> Now that Square-Enix has Jettisoned many non-core assets and fattened itself up, someone will try to buy Square-Enix. Sony or Nintendo. Depending on how it goes, the same argument about folks being concerned about “Final Fantasy” being a console exclusive will come up (especially if Sony), and there could be a little bit of a battle about it.

Rich Prediction add on #1: Nintendo / Niantic will announce Pikmin bloom closing

Thanks, Rich!
I would be overjoyed if Atlus remade Persona 1 & 2, but they frequently like to act as if they don’t exist. But if remakes would be the way in which they can finally fully acknowledge them, I’d be all for it. It’s funny how there’s a rumor that Persona 3 might get remade.
Oh, this reminded me that I never checked to see who the distributor for the Mario movie was, which is Universal. That means it might go to Peacock, but it would be hilarious if the Mario and Sonic movies were on the same streaming platform.
I KNEW I forgot a prediction, about Square Enix potentially being acquired. If I had to guess one out of those two companies, it would be Sony. I’m not sure if Nintendo has the money, but I’m willing to be surprised.
