DC Live! SMT: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon, Part 1 Livestream

SMT-DS2-RKvsKA-01152023

Welcome to my first livestream of 2023. After fulfilling a bunch of requests in 2022 and some unfinished business, I’m going to start on a game I’ve been wanting to play for a while. That game is none other than Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon, a game with an absurdly long SEO-killing title, and a bad case of colon cancer. I had meant to start on this action RPG earlier, but a lot of delays and schedule changes meant it had to be bumped into January.

SMT: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon was released in October 2008 in Japan and May 2009 in North America. It was one of the last major SMT releases on the PlayStation 2. This sequel was released three years after Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army, a game I streamed the entirety of in 2021. The plot takes place shortly after the events of the original game. Raidou Kuzunoha the 14th (a title rather than an actual name) and his mentor Gouto (a talking cat), are summoned to Japan’s Capital again by the Yatagarasu organization. Once there, Raidou is reunited with Shouhei Narumi of the Narumi Detective agency. A young woman approaches the detective agency eager for help with finding a man named Dahn.

A number of quality of life improvements have been made with Devil Summoner 2, including the ability to bring two demons into battle, Raidou can now dodge attacks, and the magic and weapons crafting system have been reworked. Demon negotiation has also been added, bringing the game in line with other SMT titles.

Devil Summoner 2 was well-received by both critics and fans, though Metacritic users gave the game a low score. A special edition was released alongside the standard edition of the game in North America. The special edition featured the game, and a Raiho plushie in a numbered collector’s box. (I have number 17,546 if you’re curious.) The game itself didn’t stay in print long and even though tens of thousands of the special editions were sold, the game itself is quite expensive these days. Copies of the game along with the case and manual can easily cost $150 to $200. The special edition of the game regularly goes for $250 to $300. The game was released on PSN as a PS2 Classic for a reasonable $9.99. At the time of this writing, the game is still available on PSN, but it can only be purchased through the PlayStation store on the PS3. Sadly, this game has not been made available on modern consoles.

It is actually cheaper to buy a used PS3 and a digital copy of the game on PSN than it is to buy a physical copy. This is an absurd notion and is fitting for the absurd times we currently live in.

Anyway…

Join me at 8PM Eastern, 7PM Central on our Twitch Channel as I return to Tokyo’s Capital to solve some mysteries in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon.

As always, a recording of the stream will be archived on our YouTube channel and embedded below.
