DC Live! Gargoyles Halloween Livestream

gargoyles-10312022 - A screen shot from the Sega Genesis game, Gargoyles

Happy Halloween, dear readers! Tonight I’ll be picking up my controller again for a special spooky night one-off stream. The game of choice for this year is Disney’s Gargoyles. This is a game I owned and played back when it was released in 1995 as a pre-teen. Being a huge fan of the animated series, there was no way I could pass on the game. I received a copy for Christmas and spent weeks working my way through this difficult game. I enjoyed it and made it all the way to the second to last level, but I’m not sure if I actually beat the game or not. Even at the age of 12, my free time might not have been a match for the toughness of Gargoyles.

In this mix between a brawler and a platformer, Goliath is in search of the evil artifact, the Eye of Odin. This talisman can transform the holder and grant them incredible power. Like in the events of the animated series, Goliath is forced to sleep for 1000 years thanks to a curse. Once the curse is broken he finds himself in New York City. Currently his former lover, Demona currently holds the Eye of Odin. Once in the present day, he must seek her out to in order to destroy the talisman.

This title was released in November 1995 and was developed by Disney Software. It was published by Buena Vista Interactive and remained a Sega Genesis exclusive. A Super Nintendo version had been planned at one point, but was ultimately scrapped. Amazingly, Gargoyles does not work on the Sega Genesis 3 and the reason is unknown. Likewise, it doesn’t run on a Hyperkin Retron 5 (or at least it didn’t for me). I’ll be playing my original copy on an Analogue Mega Sg.

The game was well-received by critics at the time, though many noted how frustrating the controls are. Non-responsive controls aside, the game itself is downright gorgeous and translates the animated feel of the TV show. It’s a real treat for gamers and fans of the show, especially those with infinite patience. At one point it seemed this Genesis game would be lost to time, but Disney surprised everyone by announcing an upcoming remaster of Gargoyles earlier this year from Empty Clip Studios. In a vein similar to the Disney Afternoon Collection, this remaster should offer a bunch of modern additions to the game, including save states. The remaster still doesn’t have a price or release date as of this writing.

Remaster or not, I’m pleased to stream the game for you. Now beating it is another matter entirely. Finished or not, this particular stream is a one and done.

Join me at 7PM Eastern, 6PM Central on our Twitch Channel as I navigate the world of Gargoyles for one night only.

As always, a recording of the stream will be archived on our YouTube channel and embedded below.
