A Look Back at Geek News Predictions for 2020

2020 was a hell of a year. When doing my predictions a year ago, a global pandemic and crushing recession certainly weren’t on my prediction list. I can’t say I’m too pleased with the results of my predictions, but not every year can be a winner.

Nintendo Announces a More Powerful Switch:

I predicted that Nintendo would announce a new 4k Switch to compete with the newest console generation. I also said, while the new Switch would be announced this year, it wouldn’t actually release until March 2021. In this instance I mostly missed the mark. There was talk of a “Switch Pro” rumored to be coming from Nintendo for most of the year, but nothing has materialized. I’m certain a Switch Pro is coming, but only Nintendo knows when that will happen.

The Xbox Series X Will Receive an Official Nickname:

I noted the Xbox Series X is a weird and confusing name, so I suggested Microsoft would give the new console a nickname. I was dead wrong in this prediction as not only did Microsoft not give the Xbox Series X a nickname, but they also released the Xbox Series S. Fortunately, this isn’t a repeat of the Wii U situation and people do understand the Series X and S are brand new consoles. I also didn’t foresee the systems being in such short supply right after launch.

Shin Megami Tensei V Gets a Release Date:

A year ago I noted that it had been two years since fans last received news about Shin Megami Tensei V. Atlus has been teasing SMTV news for 2020, so it made sense that a release date would be given. While the news and a new trailer for the game were released, there’s still no solid release date. In this case, I was somewhat off the mark. The game will be out in 2021 and is set for a worldwide release instead of launching in Japan first. Otherwise, we still don’t have any information about the plot of the game or even the main cast. Also, Persona 5 Scramble (renamed Persona 5 Strikers for the west) isn’t due out in the North America until February, 23 2021. I also surprised to see an HD remaster of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne set to release in 2021. I might have been off about SMTV, but there’s a lot of Shin Megami Tensei set to release throughout 2021.

The Democratic Primary Will be Wild and Damaging:

2020 was an election year and I predicted the Democratic primary would be wild, damaging, and uglier than 2016. In fact, it would be so destructive that Trump would just barely be reelected. This is one prediction that I’m happy to be mostly wrong about. The primary got ugly at times and we had over 20 candidates. However, once the primaries took place most of the candidates dropped out leaving Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden as the sole contenders. After Super Tuesday, Senator Sanders dropped out and all of the former candidates gave their support to Vice President Biden. The election would go on to have record turnout out, and Biden had a comfortable win over Trump. What I didn’t predict is that a good number of Trump’s supporters wouldn’t believe the results of the election nor would Trump concede even after multiple recounts and lawsuits.

Facebook Decides to Push Forward with Libra:

I wrote that Facebook would launch its own cryptocurrency, Facebook Libra despite pushback from governments and privacy advocates. Boy, was I off the mark here. Facebook still plans to launch the cryptocurrency, but will do so sometime in 2021. The fierce opposition and concerns about privacy really did give CEO Mark Zuckerberg pause. Additionally, Facebook no longer plans to make the token itself, but will do so via partnership with the Diem association. Diem was originally the Libra association, but group changed its name to help put some distance between it and Facebook. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more delays given the intense antitrust scrutiny Facebook is dealing with on a variety of fronts.
