The Smell of the New Guilty Gear’s Promotional Cycle

It’s been nearly two months since Arc System Works revealed the newest Guilty Gear game, and it’s since been made clear that their plan entails providing new info in small drips. This started with the first trailer at Evo 2019, which showed off Sol and Ky in the game’s new visual style and teased a still-unknown character, and continued with a Tokyo Game Show trailer that focused on both characters again and teased May. The newest trailer shown at CEOtaku this past weekend set this pattern in stone.

The new trailer fully shows off May in action. It’s tough to see everything that’s changed about her outside the new outfit thanks to how short a preview it is, but it’s another all-too-brief opportunity to see how impressive it looks in motion. The trailer ends by teasing another returning character: Axl Low, another face that’s been part of the franchise since the original installment.

The tease just before Axl appeared was particularly cruel. The butterfly suggested that Anji Mito would be teased instead, a character previously associated with a butterfly motif. Anji has been missing in action since the Guilty Gear XX games, and didn’t appear in the previous Xrd series. Axl’s popular, but this wasn’t the long-awaited return fans wanted. On the other hand, this could have been a legitimate tease for Anji appearance later, unless Arc System Works just wants to play even more games with fans.

Arc System Works has fallen into a pattern that involves providing quick glimpses at the game every two weeks, with the next preview scheduled for the SEA Major 2019 in Singapore between October 11th and the 13th. (Expect to see it on Sunday, the 13th, like the preview above.) This is leading up to the big reveal scheduled to occur at the ArcRevo World Tour Final 2019, which will happen on November 16th and 17th in Irvine, California. The game will also make a playable appearance there. The previews thus far have been appealing appetizers, but we’ll get a full smell of the game in a little over a month.
