The Striking Phantom Thieves Will Switch Genres for Persona 5 Scramble

For as much as several fans wanted the identity behind the “Persona 5 S” tease to be a Switch version of Persona 5, to follow Joker’s arrival in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the reveal of the expanded Royal version for PS4, there was a good chance it wouldn’t be that. Internet insiders have been wrong several times in the last few years, especially with guesses about games for Nintendo platforms. Any disappointment would be understandable, though, given how several gaming types would like a portable version of Persona 5 to take around with them.

The tease here was for a different kind of project: Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers. This will be an action RPG developed by Koei Tecmo and subsidiary Omega Force, the companies responsible for the Dynasty and Samurai Warriors games. The duo has also made Warriors-style games based on several other franchises over the years, featuring anime titles like One Piece and Gundam and other video game franchises like The Legend of Zelda and Fire Emblem. The Phantom Strikers will join them.

Few details have been revealed for the game thus far, outside of how it will involve Persona 5 characters battling hordes of enemies in several locations. The teaser shows Persona 5 protagonist Joker battling several Personas (demons in the overall Megaten mythos) in a darkness-shrouded Shibuya district in Tokyo, including Pyro Jack and Pixie, while using physical attacks and his Arsene Persona. Its genre classification as an action RPG implies that it could take cues from titles like Fire Emblem Warriors and the Dragon Quest Heroes games in having a larger focus on stats and levels.

Atlus clearly isn’t ready to show much, but at least they were willing to provide a title. They also confirmed the platforms as PlayStation 4 and Switch, meaning Nintendo’s platform is getting something in the future. (Note that Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth is also coming for 3DS, which will release on June 4th.) This won’t be enough to please everyone who was hoping for a Switch port of Royal, however.

No release date or timeframe was given for The Phantom Strikers, but it should be confirmed the next time the game is shown. More characters will undoubtedly be revealed in that time, though it’s a pity this will only be a Persona 5 game, and likely won’t include characters from other Persona titles. In the meantime, please don’t believe everything you read on the internet, because there are a lot of fake “insiders” out there.
