Persona 5 Is About to Get Royal

It’s been nearly three months since Atlus announced Persona 5 R, though they provided very few details alongside it outside a teaser confirming the console as PlayStation 4. This was all that was necessary for the internet speculation machine to run wild, as the teaser hinted at a possible expanded version of the main Persona 5 game. Atlus wanted to keep everyone waiting until the Persona 5 the Animation: The Stars and Ours anime special aired on TV, where they promised to provide more details.

They certainly provided more, but in classic Atlus fashion, it’s still not much to go on.

The game is confirmed to be Persona 5: The Royal, and was once again confirmed only for PS4 — despite rumors claiming it’s also coming to Switch. It was also confirmed to be an RPG, which should end the speculation about it being another odd spinoff in a different genre. The teaser shows a mysterious female character from enough angles to obscure her full looks. Several fans think it could be a new female protagonist equivalent to the original game’s Joker, but there’s doubt about that given her thoughts. She’s also wearing a “1” pin, indicating how she’s a first-year student at Shujin Academy. Joker, notably, was a second-year student.

From the translation, she believes helping people is nice, but doesn’t approve of the Phantom Thieves’ overall methods. She doesn’t think their approach will be helpful in the long run, and believes it’s best when individual people help themselves. It’s tough to tell whether she’s a new protagonist or a new side character, or whether she’ll be the main character for a new scenario that runs in tandem with the main game’s story.

There’s also speculation that this may not be an expanded version of the original at all, despite the “The Royal” name being similar to Persona 4: The Golden (Persona 4: Golden in western territories). It could also be a spinoff or a sequel, though the chances of that aren’t as high as it being an expanded version.

In addition to the above solid info (the console and genre), the only thing confirmed for sure is that Atlus is determined to stretch this announcement out to a ridiculous degree. More info will be provided during the Persona Super Live P-Sound Street 2019 concert on April 24th, which really, really should be for the full reveal. If not, there’s going to be another show from fans online after the concert.
