Unfinished Business: Sudden Death

It’s Unfinished Business, and that means by definition we’re in overtime.

Given the new Smash Bros. Nintendo Direct is coming tomorrow, this seems like a wonderful place to start on our trip through the blog posts that never were. Besides, I missed out on Evo this year. Gotta feed the fighting games when I can.

”Sudden Death” was an idea I had almost 8 years ago that was supposed to serve four purposes. First, it was to expand the multimedia offerings Damage Control had into game-related sketch comedy. Second, it was a way to involve my friend, Chris, who I kept sneaking through Damage Control’s back door. It was also the first test of a new HD camcorder I bought off of Woot! Finally, it was a tribute to the early video work of a friend from college, whose newer work you can see here.

The original footage of Chris and I was filmed in 1080i with that camcorder. I bought it in response to the new HD reality on YouTube. I previously used an SD camcorder with MiniDV tapes, and you’ll see a project from those days before we’re done with Unfinished Business.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U wasn’t out when this was originally filmed. I captured that footage recently in order to finish the sketch. Given that I live 1,000 miles from Chris now, doing reshoots isn’t really an option. Which is unfortunate, because we were terrible actors and I’d really like to change some of the reaction shots to make the editing smoother.

Why did this never come to be? Part of it was that capturing Super Smash Brothers Brawl footage would mean I had to somehow stitch together 1080i and 480p footage (though the switch between 1080i and 1080p in this finished video is still rather jarring).

I also needed to replace my game capture device. One only needs to look back to my M.C. Kids footage to see that it wasn’t going to be up to snuff to record from my Wii. It might not have even been able to do widescreen to begin with.

So now I present my first, and probably shortest, piece of Unfinished Business:
